Sissel Kyrkjebø, also known
as just Sissel, is considered one of the world's top
crossover sopranos. She was born in Bergen, Norway,
the gateway to the fjords on Norway’s western
coast. It’s a place where she has always found
her muse. Sissel’s music has already touched millions.
A child star since the age of 11, she is now a national
institution in Norway and has performed all across the
globe, selling six million solo albums since her recording
debut at the age of only 16 and is a featured vocalist
on the biggest selling sound track recording in history,
Titanic (30 million sold).
Sissel has enjoyed a rich and varied
career spanning more than 20 years that has included
singing the Olympic hymn at the 1994 Winter Olympics
in Lillehammer, Norway, representing Norway at the Nobel
Peace Prize Galla Concert, and performing at the first
Christmas concert in Moscow with the great tenors Plácido
Domingo and Jose Carreras. Sissel has performed for
kings and queens, and performed duets with Charles Aznavour,
Neil Sedaka, Warren G, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Josh Groban,
Diana Krall, Russell Watson and The Chieftains.
She received her first U.S. Grammy
nomination on Dec 6th, 2007 for her collaboration with
the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. “Spirit of the Season”
was nominated for the Best Classical Crossover Album
of the Year, as well as Best Engineered Classical Album.
Billboard also selected the album as"2008 Year-End
Top Classical Albums".
Sissel's musical style runs the
gamut from Pop and Traditional Folk songs, to Classical
vocals and Operatic Arias. She possesses a "crystalline"
voice and impressively wide vocal range, sweeping down
from mezzo-soprano notes, in Arias such as Mon cœur
s'ouvre à ta voix from Saint-Saëns's Opera
Samson et Dalila, to the F natural above the soprano
C.
In 2009 Sissel will release a new
album and will tour in Norway and Sweden.
